HATS

This site is mostly a scrapbook of personal show and tell, less on formal work. But here are some words on things I care about and do…

Like a lot of 21st century humans, I wear many hats. I wear a few in the propaganda department — a slightly pretentious way of saying I get a kick out of understanding people, problem-solving and working on persuasive ways to transmit messages.

I also code-switch between social scientist and creative collaborator. From critical causes to highly-regulated public and corporate realms, my powers span: applied research and insight — engagement — strategy — words, pictures — storytelling for change — education — co-design — systems thinking, UX/CX/BrandX and journeys. I have visual journalism hats too. And others for groovy things like CSR, brand activism and the triple bottom line.

BLUES & REDS

Humans see things differently and need different things. Inclusivity, and human-centred design thinking are just as vital as the spark.

Ethnography and connecting with people are central to everything. Bringing together the perspectives and experiences of different humans, different places and contexts. Being mindful of how everyone else’s hat fits is the world we need to live in.

I’ve played for the blues, and the reds. Producing transmedia solutions, comms, reporting and service improvement for non-profit and human rights organisations, momentum-building for just transition and climate initiatives, place-making and brand development for skyscrapers, working on perception change for AI in health and social care. Getting to grips with the complex — and the sensitive — and transmitting this effectively at every level. From participation and engagement, co-design, innovation and outcome mapping, to improving experiences, content and reporting, I like finding out what matters most — and seeing that turn into impact.

Projects with: Greenpeace, McGraw-Hill Asia, National Geographic Learning, Wanda Group, BlackRock, K11, UNESCO, ENABLE Scotland, SCVO, AgeUK, BUPA, Edinburgh University, City of Edinburgh Council, amongst other entities great and small.
